Kunjani Wine: New Label Reveal

Last week Wednesday I was invited to attend the Kunjani Wines event to witness the unveiling of their new label!

It was an awesome event, bloggers were able to taste some of the amazing Kunjani Wines, explore their beautiful estate and their villas while mingling over some delicious finger foods and snacks.

I had the time of my life and got to meet and chill with some of my faves in the industry!

About Kunjani Wines (From their Press Release):

“At Kunjani we are all about greeting guests with a warm welcome, and the hands on the label represent a greeting between friends. Kunjani means ‘Hi, how are you?’ and that is exactly how friendships start,” says Pia Watermeyer, Kunjani’s co-owner.

Kunjani Wines is a new boutique winery high up on the Bottelary Hills outside Stellenbosch where good food, fine wine and luxurious accommodation combine to truly reflect the good life … and the true character of this spectacular place where love and passion are reflected in every creation.

Kunjani opened its doors in November 2017 and quickly became a favourite among gastronomes and wine lovers alike, as well as people who come to experience its luxurious villas with their spectacular views.

Kunjani’s New Wine Labels

But one is never too young to renew and innovate! After various awards for its wines and rave reviews for the restaurant and architectural design of its tasting room and restaurant, it was decided to bring the labels of the wines in line with the upmarket character of the facilities at Kunjani. The well-known design studio Haumann Smal was approached and new labels were designed.

The brief was to upgrade the existing labels into a more contemporary, sophisticated and timeless look. Paul Barth, Pia’s husband and co-owner, wanted to retain the two hands (one male, one female) doing a “fist bump” which symbolises a greeting, while Pia wanted to incorporate the architectural elements and colours of the building and restaurant. The new labels are printed in charcoal with a glossy high build to contrast with the matt paper.

The element of the two hands, redrawn in a graphic line work style, is placed in a small oval to be used on its own or as part of the logo and brand mark.

The farm is owned by a German entrepreneur, Paul Bath, and Pia Watermeyer, a South African businesswoman.

Their Wine Maker – Carmen Stevens

Carmen graduated from the Elsenburg Agricultural College near Stellenbosch in 1995, becoming the first black winemaker in South Africa.

She joined Distell as assistant winemaker for the Zonnebloem brand. Later she took on the role as winemaker for Distell’s new Tukulu brand, a black empowerment project.

Two award-winning top 10 Pinotages, a stint in California and representing Tukulu abroad was followed by a period at Welmoed for Stellenbosch Vineyards.

Then she spent 8 years at Amani where she won the 2008 Decanter Red Bordeaux Varietals Trophy for her Amani Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2006.

Kunjani has only 2½ hectares under vine, all shiraz, while Carmen also has access to nearby cabernet sauvignon and merlot vineyards. The estate’s Riesling is imported from Germany’s Rheingau region.

More about Kunjani:

The Estate has An amazing restaurant which will make any event or day out, a memorable one!

There are various self-catering Villas available on the estate for rent which sleep between 2 and 4 people!

They are fully equipped and include luxuries such as washers and dryers, coffee machines, wall-panel heating, air-conditioning, smart TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi and private, shaded verandas with braai facilities.

It’s a small but beautiful estate which is a must see if you find yourself in Stellenbosch! Stop by Kunjani Wines and watch the sunset while sipping their amazing Chenin Blanc (my personal fave!) you won’t regret it!

Until next time!

#ClicksCurls: Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk

What’s up 20 Somethings!

So I’ve been using one of the products I got in the Clicks Curls Goodie Bag for the past week: the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk, Leave-in Moisturizer.

When I looked at the bottle I was like, “What is “Hair milk” even?” So let me tell you a bit about this product and the Carol’s Daughter Brand!

Carol’s Daughter Brand:

The brand was started by Lisa, who is…wait for it… Carol’s Daughter. And the entire brand is dedicated to the relationship between mothers and their daughters. The brand was inspired by the mother-Daughter relationship that leads to the lifelong relationship with our hair, passed down from generation to generation.

Lisa started the brand in 1993 in her Kitchen in Brooklyn (Yes! It’s an American Brand) it was meant only for close family and friends, but everyone loved it so much, that soon the brand grew into the name it is today!

“Love is, and always will be, our first ingredient.” – Lisa

The Hair Milk:

⁃ it’s aimed to keep dry hair from resulting in frizzy curls.

⁃ It helps protect your hair from breakage, thirst and unmanageability.

⁃ It contains Shea Butter to Hydrate your curls.

⁃ Soybean oil has been added to soften and strengthen your hair.

⁃ It also has Agave Nectar to lock in moisture and keep hair extra healthy

My Opinion

When you squeeze it out of the bottle, it literally looks like Milk…and the best way I can describe it, is that it feels like rubbing love over your hair. You don’t need a lot of it, because it spreads through your hair so effortlessly, enriching every strand.

It’s got a very, very strong scent, that made my sinuses get all defensive, but once your hair dries, the scent neutralizes a bit and it’s actually quite pleasant.

The product does exactly what it says it will, my Hair was less frizzy and it feels and looks more moisturized. I just wish the frizz control lasted a bit longer because two days after my wash day, I can see the frizz creeping in again. But as a leave-in conditioner, it’s great because you don’t need to accompany it with anything else in order to have curls that look amazing.

My hair after applying the Hair Milk.

Where can you get it?

The brand has just launched in South Africa and can be found at any Clicks store for R299 or on Takealot for R265.

So it’s on the pricey side. Honestly, are there other products that can give you the same results for cheaper? Yes. But Carol’s Daughter is Paraben free, petroleum free, contains no mineral oil and no artificial colors- so that should be considered when thinking about the price.

Have you tried Carol’s Daughter before? Let me know what you thought in the comments!

Byyyye!

Adulting Diaries: Handling Friendships

Hey 20 Somethings,

So, let’s be real…Friendships in your twenties are hard! Its a crazy time in our lives where suddenly, we are responsible for ourselves and our own wellbeing, we’re trying to excel and move forward in our careers, we’re adjusting to this whole adulting thing, we’re trying to handle our finances and trying not to go bankrupt before our lives even start…the list goes on and on. So you might find that during this period of time, you might struggle to hold onto the friends you have left.

My little brother always makes fun of me because I have so little friends. I always have to remind him that when I was in High school, I had LOADS of friends, but life after high school is a different story; people start studying, people move away or you guys grow apart- life happens.

Besides all the craziness of adulthood, you might still be dating as well, that’s another thing you need to balance with your friendships. It almost feels impossible!

I’m extremely busy, at the moment, Im working two jobs and training for a third job and will possibly be taking on a fourth job in the second half of the year. I live with my boyfriend and a roommate, and still try to have a reasonably healthy social life by going out and doing things people my age should be doing. It’s also hard, because as a performer, my hours are often opposite to the people in my life.

Luckily, my friends understand my lifestyle. I’m the friend who isn’t going to message you everyday and check up on you. If you text me, I’ll reply immediately but the conversation will be short because I’m messaging you in between running from one thing to the next BUT, they all know, if they need me – I’ll be there. I’ll clear my schedule and make time for them, no matter what.

I try to keep my friendships going strong because my friends are my sisters and the family members I never had. ( I come from quite a small family and I don’t know half of my cousins. And I never had a sister.) So these are the few friendship rules I’ve come up with for myself:

  1. Check on your Friends: I try to check in with my friends at least once a week. Whether it’s in a group chat and I can check on them all at once, or if I see a worrying tweet from them and I message them privately. Even if it’s just a quick “Hi, Hope you’re good! Miss you!” It shows your friends that you are thinking of them, even when you’re extremely busy and you’re able to make some time for them.
  2. Try to Make Plans at Least Once or Twice a Month: I make a conscious effort to make plans with my friends, I often do it as a group- like a braai or going out to dinner together. That way I get to see all my favourite people at the same time and get to spend a little bit of time with each of them individually. (Because let’s face it, life gets real busy for all of us.)  Or find ways that you and certain friends can bond over something you both like: You both enjoy working out? Go on a gym date! Both love a specific TV show? Schedule a weekly date to watch the latest episode together. – These are things you’re going to do anyways, why not include your friends when you do them?
  3. Don’t Let Your Relationship Ruin Your Friendships: This one I struggle with a lot. When I date someone, it’s often hard for me to remember to manage my time equally between work, my love and my friends. But you must!! My trick has been, making sure my boyfriend has met all of my friends and that he likes them and forms relationships with them! This way, I can have friends over while he’s there too, I can invite a girl friend over for coffee and bae is in there spilling the tea with us! It’s awesome. But always remember to check with your friends first, sometimes they just need some alone time with their friends and don’t wanna hang out with your man ALL THE TIME.
  4. Write Letters!: When I was in high school, My friends and I would write each other letters EVERY DAY! We all knew what was going on in each other’s lives because we were constantly communicating. I’m giving myself the challenge to write one letter for each of my friends this year. It serves as a recon, you can tell them about things they’ve missed out on in your life, you can open up about what’s bothering you, tell them about your goals and hopes for the future. Give them a quick update on your life, because how often do you get to tell everyone in your life everything you need to tell them? It will be good for you and for them and I honestly think it will make your friendships stronger, especially if they write back.

So those are my four goals regarding my friendships this year.

Don’t beat yourself up if you struggle to keep your friendships alive… This adulting thing is hard. But the great news is, you’re not alone. Reach out when you feel you need help and check on the people in your life who have been too quiet lately. Everyone is going through something right now- but we don’t have to do it alone.

If you made it this far down this post, close this tab and go tell a friend you love them and miss them!

Until next time!

Blistex Conditioning Lip Serum Review

A few weeks ago, I was gifted the new Blistex Lip Serum and I really enjoyed using the product, so I thought I’d write a review about it!

Here is some information on the product:

  • Blistex is America’s leading lip care range.
  • The Conditioning Lip Serum works to restore your lips and will help maintain super-hydrated and conditioned lips.
  • It comes with a unique, dose control pump dispenser that releases just the right amount of the concentrated serum for the optimal effectiveness.
  • The formula consists of olive and avocado oils, Vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acids which ensures immediate conditioning and unparalleled lip care!
  • It retails for around R120 at all leading pharmacies and stores in South Africa.

My opinion:

It feels so great when you apply it for the first time, it’s actually hard to stick to the recommended dose which comes out of the pump dispenser. (You’ll want to smother your lips in it.)

Once applied, my lips appeared and felt immediately more hydrated and cared for. The serum lasts quite long on your lips and you won’t feel the need to reapply it every few hours. I use it about twice a day – mornings and evenings.

I love the packaging, it’s sleek and the pump dispenser really helps when it comes to application.

I did feel that it left a layer of product on my lips, that peeled off after a few hours, an annoying element of the product, but I think it’s because I was applying too much at first, once I stuck to applying one pump per application- the problem was solved.

I’ve been a loyal user of the Blistex DCT lip range, so I was very excited to receive the latest in the innovative Blistex range. I’m pleased with the results this product has delivered.

R120 may seem a bit pricy for a lip product, but if you want results, this is the product for you!

Until Next time!

Adulting Diaries: Life Update

Hey guys!

First of all, Happy easter! I hope you’re all having an amazing long weekend and enjoying a much needed break. I sure I am! I’ve forced myself to relax this weekend and stay in when I can…so that’s exactly what I am doing.

Now I know I’ve been terrible on the blogging front of things! I’ve been very pre-occupied the past few weeks. First of all, I’ve been hard at work at launching my Youtube channel for the blog! Which I would be extremely grateful to anyone who checks it out and shows some love! Also, don’t forget to subscribe.

The channel focusses on make up for beginners as well has natural hair tutorials and product reviews. I’ve really enjoyed the process of filming videos, editing and uploading them to Youtube and though the view count isn’t high right now, it’s something I’d like to stick with. Videos are uploaded weekly, so check it out now!

I also signed the blog up on Twitter!

Product wise, I’ve been sent a really cool new range, which I am not allowed to tell you about yet, as the range has not been released in stores yet. But what I can tell you is that it’s working wonders for my skin and as soon as I have the go ahead, I’ll tell you all about it.

My life has been extremely busy this past month. My boyfriend started his new job and flew off to Australia for the month. He’s back this Friday for a few days before he leaves again for a little longer, so obviously this has been a crazy adjustment for me. If you know me and my boyfriend, you’ll know we do everything together, so him leaving kind of made me feel a little lost and lonely as hell. I’ve never been one of those girls who saw themselves dropping everything for a guy, but the moment he got on that plane I was ready to drop everything and follow him. But of course I can’t do that, and I can’t let myself do that. Girl, I’ve got goals, even when I’m lonely.

So I spent a few days being sad and crying and made sure I was surrounded by friends and family and eventually I learned to work with my new normal. And thankfully, there have been plenty of things to keep me busy. I’ve been blessed to be sent work in this crazy performing industry I am in; after Langarm at the Fugard, I moved on to play Pinocchio at the Nassau Theatre and then I was offered a job at the Rockwell Theatre to work in a show called Kaapse Stories. So apart from working there, I also attend castings all day, teach drama and I’m starting training to become a Barre instructor!

Wow. That’s a lot. The biggest challenge through all this has been remembering to look after myself. I’m forcing myself to go to the gym, even when I’m feeling terrible, I stay social and make sure I have time for my friends and I try to eat regularly. That’s been going well, I do forget to eat sometimes but most days I’m on top of it.

If anything, this experience has taught me how much I enjoy time alone, like not all the time- but I do enjoy it. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to just be alone with my own thoughts and have the freedom to focus on me for a bit.

Anyway, I’m very excited to have my boyfriend back this Friday, even if it’s just for a few days, and I promise to not drop everything and follow him around the world. (Although that sounds amazing) And I will definitely be getting back to some good blogging and content for you guys!

Thanks for the love so far.

Dove EvenTone Deodorant Review

For the past two weeks I’ve been testing out the new Dove Eventone Deodorant. The lovely ladies at Rubybox sent it my way and gave me some information on this new little product:

What makes it different?

Due to hair removal methods like shaving and waxing, you might find that your underarm skin may be feeling the effects of the harsh treatment- resulting in dark marks on the skin. Dove has created new Eventone Deodorant to combat dark underarms by creating a formula with 1/4 moisturizing cream and calendula extract to help improve the appearance of the underarms.

It also promises 48 hour protection!

My opinion??

It feels great to use and I have definitely felt an improvement in the skin under my arms, it feels much softer even after I’ve shaved and I’ve noticed an improvement in its appearance.

Here are my before and after pictures:

As for it promising 48 hour protection, I’m yet to find a Deodorant which promises this and actually means it. I’m an active girl and on days when I’m working out, I’ve experienced that I’ll need to apply this Deodorant more than once to stay fresh. On normal days, however it lasts at least 24 hours, but the smell does start to fade and the protection seems to wear of throughout the day, not leaving me as fresh as I would like.

The verdict?

All in all, it’s an awesome product if you’re looking to take care of your skin under your arms then this new formula is for you. As a Deodorant, it gets the job done to a certain extent but you may need to reapply during the day!

Here’s what my friend, Nicole had to say about it:

“I enjoyed the moisturising effect that Dove eventone has and the fact that it was sensitive enough for my skin. However I feel that it didn’t have enough odor control for me and didn’t it didn’t provide me with 48 hours of antiperspirant.”

Will you be trying this product out??

Until next time!

Nivea Men’s Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Every now and then, Rubybox sends me some products on behalf of their brother website, Manbox, for….wait for it, My Man!

This time they sent me the new Nivea Men’s Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for my boyfriend and the other men in my life who have been testing it out until now. Which promises #FlakeFree hair for your man, which I was excited about because my boyfriend, Warren, suffers from dry scalp and dandruff.

About Nivea Men Anti-Dandruff:

It’s formula frees up to 100% visible dandruff flakes and prevents reappearance with regular use. It works to bring men’s scalps back to a natural balance and contains bamboo extracts to strengthen his hair from the roots.

Here’s a picture of his hair right before he started using this shampoo:

After using it for two weeks, Warren’s hair feels incredibly soft and it looks much healthier and the best part is that he no longer has any dandruff, he really is flake free! It’s super refreshing to come across an anti-dandruff product that actually works. And it smells great, it’s a fresh smell that’s not too overpowering.

Here’s an after picture of Warren’s hair:

If your man suffers from dandruff, this might be the product he needs.

Until next time!

My Fitness Journey: Defined Physique Fitness

So in November 2018 I was approached by Kyle who runs Defined Physique Fitness to start training with him, to achieve my fitness goals.

Naturally, I jumped to the opportunity and started training immediately.

I’ve had a few experiences with personal trainers before, but never with one who is as dedicated to my personal goals as Kyle.

In our first session, he tested my fitness levels and asked me to identify the areas of my body I’d like to work on.

I’ll share them with you, because I like you:

  • my arms are one of the most obvious areas on my body that show weight gain. I also have the upper body strength of a new born baby. I used to have great arms, so I’d just like to get them back to looking toned and strong.
  • I’d also like to work at losing some belly fat and getting myself back to flat tummy vibes
  • While I’m glad I’ve finally got a bit of a booty, I’d like to tone it and firm it a bit more.
  • My legs are very strong but they could use some toning -I’d also like to try and eliminate cellulite through exercise.

Here’s what I used to look like:

So the goal is to try and find a happy medium between what I look like now and what I looked like then- because I like things about both my bodies. I’ve felt very insecure lately about my body because I’ve picked up a bit of weight, but through this fitness journey and working out, I’m slowly regaining my confidence and starting to love my body and all the amazing things it can do.

It’s easy to be body-positive when you can fit into anything in the store, I’m trying to love my body in every shape and form it may take.

Working with Kyle has helped me push past my limits, he’s always in the gym with me saying, “just one more rep, Nadine” – and that’s the type of push someone like me needs. Our workouts are focused on what I want to achieve but Kyle also knows that I have to perform 6-7 shows a week which requires me to dance, so he gives me workouts that don’t leave me too fatigued afterwards.

Here’s a few examples of workouts we’ve done this far:

I’ve already started to look a bit more toned and people have pointed out the difference in my body- but nothing can compare to the confidence I’ve gained over the past few months. And for that I’ll always be thankful.

If you’re looking for a trainer who is dedicated to your goals and helping you achieve them, give Kyle a call on +27 74 247 1352 or email him at definedphysiquefitness@gmail.com

Training takes place in Pinelands in a private gym, so you don’t have any muscle guys laughing at you while you’re struggling to do a push up (trust me, the struggle is real!)

I’ll be posting some update pics in a few weeks, so watch this space!

Until next time,

Nadine
