Creation Wines: Fynarts Story

Last week I was invited by Megan Richards (The Authentic Girl) to join her and a few other bloggers for a bloggers lunch at Creation Wines.

Creation is one of my favourite wine farms, I visited it earlier this year and was blown away by it’s beauty and the way it brings art and wine together. The wine farm is situated in the Hemel En Arde Valley in Hermanus – which produces some of the best wines in South Africa.

Creation likes to work in association with local artists and whenever you visit you’ll most likely see the work of a different artist every time you are there. They are currently displaying the sculptures of Nanette Ranger, which I found to be out of this world.

We were invited to try their brand new Fynarts Story Menu, which pairs Creation’s exquisite wines with creative food options which is complemented by the sculptures by Nanette Ranger and the magical chords compiled by local sound designer Ivo Ivanov- it really is an amazing sensory experience.

Pairing guru and art fundi Carolyn Martin explains: “At Creation we believe that wine and food pairing is an art in itself. To demonstrate this, our brand-new FynArts Story of Creation Pairing Menu brings you what we like to describe as ‘delectable art’, but with an exciting difference.

Thanks to the guidance of consultant forager, Chef Ryan Anderson and our landscaper and fynbos expert Meindert Poerink, our new menu abounds with the allure of citrus buchu, wild garlic flower and wild sage to titillate the senses and beautifully enhance our wines.”

About the menu:

The menu or “Story” consists of seven chapters, as well as a complimentary ‘Welcome”.

During our visit we got to taste a little bit more than we would on a standard visit, instead of being welcomed with their Creation Cool-Climate Chenin Blanc we were served their new MCC, Elation which was so good, some of the women were asking for seconds!

We were then served their Cool-Climate Chenin Blanc which was accompanied by a scrumptious selection of breads.

“The Cape seed rolls are presented on a golden hand sculptured by Nanette Ranger and served with homemade butter with citrus buchu and blood orange olive oil. The shards of bread (honey, almond and wild rosemary) are garnished with dehydrated seaweed in patterns of local seaweed and coral and served on an earthy wooden board. A delectable cream cheese dip exudes wild garlic fynbos and has just a pinch of Pinot salt. A wow for the senses, and that’s only the start!”

Next up, we were treated to a glass of Creation Sauvignon Blanc/Semillion which was matched with a broccoli and pear soup, ricotta, basil, gnudi (Raw gnocchi made with ricotta) and pumpkin seed crisp. (I’m a very fussy eater, so I was worried about this item on the menu, but it was actually quite enjoyable and it paired nicely with the Sauvignon Blanc/Semillion blend!)

Chapter 3 consisted of a mushroom and spinach dumpling, veg broth, smoked paprika and wild Rosemary, which was paired with their delicious Creation Viognier.

Chapter 4 was where the flavours and textures of parsnip, caramelised cauliflower purée, walnut crisp, boerenkaas croquette, blackberry consummé and thyme are paired with the many glorious facets of the Creation Reserve Chardonnay.

We were also treated to their amazing Art of Chardonnay, which is now my favourite Chardonnay… just a little bit out of my price range.

As an addition to the menu we also got to try the Creation Grenache Noir/Viognier Rosé paired with a beetroot soup. Now I’m not someone who enjoys beetroot but paired with this rosé, it was a dream!

Moving on to Chapter 5, my favourite dish of the day, Linefish, Beetroot, Beurre Rouge, Radish, Purple Laver and Herb Oil which was paired with their delicious Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2017 (They gave me a bottle of this to take home! I’ve had to hide it from my boyfriend, because he’s been nagging me to open it.)

Chapter 6 paired the Creation Reserve Syrah with a duck bobotie with labneh, coriander and candied egg yolk.

We were also treated to a Springbok Venison which also paired amazingly with the Syrah/Grenache.

Chapter 7 meant time for dessert, a deliciously sweet jaffa cake paired with Creation’s Dessert wine; Fine Cape Vintage 2017.

Our menu had a few added extras, including an extra beetroot soup and some extra sensory experiences, incorporating, smell, taste and sound.

All in all, it was a fantastic day, spent with fantastic people.

Kunjani Wine: New Label Reveal

Last week Wednesday I was invited to attend the Kunjani Wines event to witness the unveiling of their new label!

It was an awesome event, bloggers were able to taste some of the amazing Kunjani Wines, explore their beautiful estate and their villas while mingling over some delicious finger foods and snacks.

I had the time of my life and got to meet and chill with some of my faves in the industry!

About Kunjani Wines (From their Press Release):

“At Kunjani we are all about greeting guests with a warm welcome, and the hands on the label represent a greeting between friends. Kunjani means ‘Hi, how are you?’ and that is exactly how friendships start,” says Pia Watermeyer, Kunjani’s co-owner.

Kunjani Wines is a new boutique winery high up on the Bottelary Hills outside Stellenbosch where good food, fine wine and luxurious accommodation combine to truly reflect the good life … and the true character of this spectacular place where love and passion are reflected in every creation.

Kunjani opened its doors in November 2017 and quickly became a favourite among gastronomes and wine lovers alike, as well as people who come to experience its luxurious villas with their spectacular views.

Kunjani’s New Wine Labels

But one is never too young to renew and innovate! After various awards for its wines and rave reviews for the restaurant and architectural design of its tasting room and restaurant, it was decided to bring the labels of the wines in line with the upmarket character of the facilities at Kunjani. The well-known design studio Haumann Smal was approached and new labels were designed.

The brief was to upgrade the existing labels into a more contemporary, sophisticated and timeless look. Paul Barth, Pia’s husband and co-owner, wanted to retain the two hands (one male, one female) doing a “fist bump” which symbolises a greeting, while Pia wanted to incorporate the architectural elements and colours of the building and restaurant. The new labels are printed in charcoal with a glossy high build to contrast with the matt paper.

The element of the two hands, redrawn in a graphic line work style, is placed in a small oval to be used on its own or as part of the logo and brand mark.

The farm is owned by a German entrepreneur, Paul Bath, and Pia Watermeyer, a South African businesswoman.

Their Wine Maker – Carmen Stevens

Carmen graduated from the Elsenburg Agricultural College near Stellenbosch in 1995, becoming the first black winemaker in South Africa.

She joined Distell as assistant winemaker for the Zonnebloem brand. Later she took on the role as winemaker for Distell’s new Tukulu brand, a black empowerment project.

Two award-winning top 10 Pinotages, a stint in California and representing Tukulu abroad was followed by a period at Welmoed for Stellenbosch Vineyards.

Then she spent 8 years at Amani where she won the 2008 Decanter Red Bordeaux Varietals Trophy for her Amani Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2006.

Kunjani has only 2½ hectares under vine, all shiraz, while Carmen also has access to nearby cabernet sauvignon and merlot vineyards. The estate’s Riesling is imported from Germany’s Rheingau region.

The Estate has An amazing restaurant which will make any event or day out, a memorable one!

There are various self-catering Villas available on the estate for rent which sleep between 2 and 4 people!

They are fully equipped and include luxuries such as washers and dryers, coffee machines, wall-panel heating, air-conditioning, smart TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi and private, shaded verandas with braai facilities.

It’s a small but beautiful estate which is a must see if you find yourself in Stellenbosch! Stop by Kunjani Wines and watch the sunset while sipping their amazing Chenin Blanc (my personal fave!) you won’t regret it!

Franschhoek Uncorked Festival

What’s Up 20 Somethings!

So I am a big wine drinker, and I happen to be dating someone who loves wine even more than I do. Which is great because he’s always showing me new wines and teaching me new things. Last week we attended the Franschhoek Uncorked Festival, where most of the wine farms in Franschhoek were hosting wine tastings. Each Farm had food stalls and a live band to accompany the wine tastings taking place. It really was a vibe.

The festival took place over two days, unfortunately I was only available to attend the second day, so I could only visit 3 of the farms participating in the festival.

First Stop was Boschendal, Boschendal makes one of my favourite chardonnays, so of course I had to get myself a bottle. They also launched their 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, which was available for tasting. It was an extremely easy drinking wine, which didn’t have as much of an apple taste, as their Sauvignon Blancs have had in the past. I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, they only allowed one free tasting and the others you had to pay for. Which was bleak. But if you do go to Boschendal, try their Chardonnay, The Black Angus and De Werf Blend.

(Side Note: Last night I drank a bottle of their Chardonnay Pinot Noir Blend and I absolutely loved it. It’s a great blend that brings out the best in both these grapes to give you a pleasant drinking experience. A safe choice to go for if you want to try something different but good.)

Secondly, we were off to Plaisir De Merle, which is a beautiful farm. And they offered wine tastings on Three wines, which was also unlimited. So obviously I had a few glasses. The wine that really stood out for me at this farm was their Chardonnay, It was definitely one of the nicest chardonnays I have ever had. It pairs really well with garlic based foods, so I ordered a pizza from one of the stalls and it was a match made in heaven.

Third but not least, we visited a smaller farm called Lynx Wines. We tried a few of the wines they had available for testing, but the one that really stood out for me was their Viognier Wine, which is a cultivar I’ve never tried before. This wine was a pleasant surprise to taste, fruity and refreshing is the best way I can describe it. I bought a bottle which I will be opening on a summer day by the pool. If you can get your hands on one, you must try it.

The Franschhoek Uncorked Festival was definitely a vibe and I will be returning next year, I do wish they had sold day passes in addition to the weekend passes, as we only attended one  day and had to pay the full R150 weekend pass rate. But If you’re looking for good wines, paired with amazing food and musical entertainment, this festival is for you.
